So I've come to notice this...

I have recently made the decision to become a vegetarian. I know, some people (those of you who are reading this and don't already know) might think that it's crazy or something. But yes, I have made the conscious decision to no longer eat meat. There are a few simple reasons for it, as anyone might guess, killing animals, health reasons etc. This is all godo and well. But the thing I have been noticing more and more is the way people react when I tell them.
People are real assholes about it. That's all I really have to say (of course there are the few of you who are cool about it, and you know who you are). But there is the majority of people who when i tell them, they are almost thrown aback by it. They start questioning why. And even worse, they treat it like it doesn't matter. They stick it in my face that they eat meat and that they kill animals, and it almost seems like they are trying to convert me back to eating meat. I haven't yet told my parents about this decision, but I'm sure to be met with the same hostility, if not more.
This all leads me to wonder why people react this way. Who knows, maybe if I were in their situation I would react the same way as them. But then again, I have a sort of view where I don't care what other people do if it doesn't directly affect me. I don't know, it all seems petty and childish. I am making a decision, and people don't seem to want to deal with it, so they criticize it. That kind of shit happens all the time, and frankly, it's annoying as hell. Why are people like this, is it all that hard to cope with change. Change is a part of life, deal with it.

Like most people/Americans, I think when people think they can't live with out meat, they feel threatened by something that challenges their world view. That and they're just assholes.

What the hell Tim. EAT MEAT!!!!! Quit being different. No. I am just kidding. I thought I would screw with you a little. Good for you though. Not many people take a stand on what they believe when they are faced with opposition. They back down and let people tell them what to do. I give you a tip of my hat and a hardy handshake on trying something new and standing up for what you believe in.

I'm an asshole then, because I don't see the point. It's not really taking a stand against anything. I mean, people who eat meat aren't actually killing animals, and no fewer animals will be killed because some people don't eat meat. The meat is there, and it's going to be there. It's like paper or water. People have this notion that using lots of paper brings down forest, when in reality, the paper is already there, the forest is already "brought down". The only difference is consumption.

I don't know. But it just doesn't make sense to me. It seems there's this political trend going on that says, "in order to be a good, politically conscious person, you must do these things:" and it's doing nothing but creating a bunch of sheep followers for go-nowhere, do-nothing ideals.

It's like creating an outrage for the sake of being outraged.

I don't know. But it seems like falling in line to me.

ok, heres the way i see it. i dont give a shit, if you wanna not eat meat, then do it, i dont care, whatever. just dont be one of those vegitarians who flaunt it lol. but like jordan, i dont see the point. its not like because i eat meat that i kill animals. i mean yea, its sad the way that some animals at some slaughterhouses are killed, but keep in mind that its not that way everywhere. but, its also sad that people are killing other people all over the world too. i think its best to take care of that problem before we worry about how animals are killed. its all part of the "food chain", survival of the fittest lol. its been done since the dawn of time. the only purpose of a chicken is to produce meat, and eggs for people to eat, same with cows, they are only used for meat and milk. does that mean that we should brutally kill them before we eat them? no, not at all. but as i said before, there are much worse things going on in the world that we should worry about first. but im not gonna give you shit about it, do what you want. i was just letting you know how i feel. =D

I think the point that a lot of people miss is that if enough people simply reduce, if not eliminate, the amount of meat they eat, it will have an impact--not only on personal health (heart disease is the number one killer in the US), but also on the environment. I was a vegetarian for nearly two years. Now, I occasionally eat meat but I'm not so naive to think that personal efforts don't make a difference in some way. Good for you, Tim.

The other problem is that people want to give biblical arguments about why we should eat animals, along with the "because-we-can" mentality. I also wouldn't take too much stock in being at the top of the food chain when the animals we dominate are defenseless, diseased and confined. That's like Dick Cheney shooting pay-for-play pheasants.

Animal rights aside, people never stop to think about the other reasons which are more important, for example, the devastating effects that factory farms have on pretty much everything. They put local family farms out of business; destroy soil, groundwater, lakes and streams; and produce unhealthy, hormone-injected, over-fattened food products.

The fact of the matter is that meat consumption is a leading cause of colon cancer and heart disease, and honestly, that's a much better reason to become a vegetarian than animal rights alone. Giving people shit for not eating meat is just as ignorant as giving people shit for not smoking, drinking and doping up.

The vast majority of people who attack vegetarians don't like them telling other people what to or what not to eat. The hypocrisy in that behavior is just stunning. Besides, it might feel cool to tell people to "lighten up" and just eat anything you want, but it's not quite as hip when you don't have a rectum anymore. I'm not trying use scare tactics on anyone, but to deny the obviously negative effects is just foolish.

too much of anything is bad. if you eat a shit ton of meat everyday then yea, youre going to have health problems. but eating a normal amount along with other non-meat things everyday isnt going to do shit. in some cases being a vegitarian is even unhealthy, you just have to do it right. again, im not mad at you or anything, do what you wnt, but i felt this needed to be said.

Statistics are lame.

How crazy it is that this mirrors straightedge arguments, and yet people don't get apeshit pissed.

Anyway, people have eaten meat for countless thousands of years, so have other animals.

I... have no point here. !

Oh, by the way, way not claim straightedge if you can claim vegetarianism? I'm just saying.

Just like in that movie little miss sunshine, do what u love, f everything else, except here, do what u want, screw what others think. If it makes u happy do it. I personally do not have a problem with vegetarians I tried it for..what like 3 days lol but I only eat meat prob once or twice a week anyway, I just don't like it very much. And I stay away from all red meat, WHICH IS UNHEALTHY FOR ALL YOUS!! If you're going to eat meat, it should be lean such as grilled or baked or poached chicken or turkey..Baked ham is alright..but any sort of ground red meat is terrible for your body..In my food and nutrition class the book actually said a vegetarian diet is really healthy for you as long as u get enough protein a b-vitamins and iron and folate from other foods, such as peanut butter, cereal, peanuts or other kinds of nuts, yogurt, veggie burgers(yum, i hate real burgers) any kind of vegan/vegetarian meat..umm eggs unless your vegan, however vegan is actually unhealthy as well, u don't wanna be vegan..now I'm rambling.

anyways, vegetarian diets are healthy as long as u get the right nutrients from other foods :) I'm all for you man. Remind me to get my nutrition book from home next weekend so u can read the part on being vegetarian-they actually promote it and tell u to not eat a lot of meat LOL

especially in america we take healthy foods like chicken and fry it..which makes it EXTREMELY unhealthy with all that trans fat

NO RED MEAT

Right on, Roseann!

I forgot to mention milk...probably the most important, and u drink enough of that soy stuff so that's good..I just eat yogurt every day as an alternative.

I eat a lot of cereal and cereal bars.

You're not eliminating cheese right? U can get some protein and calcium there u can even eat mexican food with no meat, just cheese! quesadillas

make sure u get lots of fruit and veggies!! veggies especially broccoli has Ca and fiber in it

can always buy products with enhanced protein in it too like this special k cereal I usually eat or other types of cereal or cereal bars

I think what you're doing is good with the meat alternatives because soy is VERY healthy for the human body.

You may actually live longer by eliminating meat from your diet, LOL especially red meat.

I guess I don't see why a choice that our good friend Timmy made had to turn into a big dispute. I believe that Timmy is an individual and he has the right to do as he pleases and I will not criticize him for that which he believes in. Although I will say that people will disagree with you no matter what and you can't take it to heart, people are different and some people are arrogant and like to say things because they disagree with you and they will be mean and ruthless and will never stop, trust me I know a great deal about that...There's really no point in getting angry at them you just have to know everyone has their own opinion and most of the time you really can't change it. My advice is do what you do and eff all those people that don't agree. Plus fighting over it is pointless and a waste of time. Keep doin what you do. Good luck in your vegetarian journey. Fuck all the close minded people!
